Progress has been made on construction of the permanent concrete masonry wall that will separate the north end of Daniels from demolition and construction. The wall, which will be permanent, will be waterproofed and insulated. Once it is complete the temperatures in the corridors at the north ends of the first and second floors should return to normal and the noise from demolition and construction should decrease.
Much of the abatement of asbestos and other hazardous substances is now complete and the north end of Daniels is nearly ready for the start of gross demolition in early December. In what used to be the library only the structure remains—mainly steel and concrete. Furnishings, ceilings, and other non-structural features are gone.
A large sign along the University Avenue sidewalk lists the architects and contractors for the project, including Strang architects and Miron Construction. Notice that caulking between the wall panels behind the sign has been removed; the caulking contained asbestos and its removal was part of the abatement by Dirty Ducts Cleaning.
Mills Street remains closed for the next 2-3 weeks and work in Charter Street continues. Loading-dock access via the normal driveway is expected by the end of November. For a bird’s-eye view of that project try the fifth floor of the psychology building across the street.
