Fire Protection. Fire protection work is going on in both Shain and Mathews first floors this week. Because of the work in Shain, the main entrance to Shain tower is closed all this week. Please enter the chemistry complex at the basement level, Daniels building, along Johnson Street. Your key will work in the lock on the door to the left of the toilet trailer as you face the building.
Note that the stairwell immediately adjacent to this entrance is preferred direction DOWN. Access upper floors using the elevators or the other Daniels stairwells with preferred direction UP. Access Shain tower via connecting floors 2, 5, or 6.
Occupants of Shain tower may exit the building by crossing over to the Daniels wing on floors 2, 5, or 6 and using the south Daniels stairs or elevators to exit at the basement level or by using the south Shain stairwell, which exits along Johnson Street. Do not take the Shain elevators to the first floor and attempt to exit via the Shain lobby
The Mathews first floor will be a construction zone from July 27 through August 14, which means we cannot use the Mathews first-floor corridor during that period. Those who need to refill liquid-nitrogen dewars or access the storage rooms for solvents room (1237A) or gas cylinders (1237B) should follow these procedures:
July 27-31 The first floor of Shain and the first floor of Mathews are both under construction. Access to the liquid nitrogen fill room is restricted to 3:30 pm or later in the day. Do not come through the first-floor corridor of Mathews. Users from Daniels or Mathews should cross over to Shain via the level connection on the fifth floor and take the Shain elevator to the first-floor lobby. Access the liquid nitrogen fill room via Shain.
Aug 1-14 The first floor of Mathews under construction. Access to the liquid nitrogen fill room is not restricted by time of day. Do not come through the first-floor corridor of Mathews. Users from Daniels or Mathews should cross over to Shain via the level connection on the fifth floor and take the Shain elevator to the first-floor lobby. Access the liquid nitrogen fill room via Shain.
July 27-Aug 14 Access to the solvent storage room (1237A) and gas cylinders (1237B) is available only through prior arrangement with Mike Bradley and Jeff Nielsen.
New Tower. The exterior of the tower changes every week as more exterior walls and windows are installed. Installation of many interior features, such as plasterboard walls, require a dry environment protected from the weather, so making walls and roofs watertight is an important goal. There is progress on all sides of the tower, ranging from windows for offices on the south side to greater enclosure of the “flash cube” on the northeast corner.
Loading-Dock Area. The acid-dilution tank in what used to be the parking lot north of the loading dock has now been covered and backfilled. Excavation work, construction, and backfilling for sewers and electrical connections to the new tower have also been completed in this area.
This information is up to date as of Monday morning. Email bulletins will be provided as needed.
